Cambridge Connect welcomes the appointment by Mayor Paul Bristow of Peter Cushing in the role of Light Rail Commissioner for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority. This places Peter at the heart of decision-making on delivery of light rail mass transit for Cambridge.
Peter is one of the leading light rail experts in the UK. He has over 25 years’ experience in the light rail industry, both in the UK and internationally, and has worked in light rail planning, procurement, design, construction, operations and safety. Peter has experience in both the private and public sector, including five years as Director of Metrolink in Manchester where he oversaw delivery of a £1.8 bn capital expansion programme. Peter was also the Midland Metro Alliance Director in Birmingham, where he led a team of planning, design and construction specialists to build three new tram extensions across the West Midlands. He has played a lead role on the UK Light Rail Safety and Standards Board.
Peter’s role with the Combined Authority will be to advise the Mayor on all aspects of planning and delivery of a light rail network for Cambridge. His expertise will help in assessing the viability of proposals, preparing business cases, and enabling successful integration of light rail with the broader transport system. Peter will help shape the long-term transport vision needed to support sustainable growth.
Peter started working with Cambridge Connect in the early stages of our initiative, over seven years ago. He has generously volunteered his time to attend numerous meetings with Cambridge Connect as we put forward our vision for light rail transit to a wide range of Cambridge stakeholders, including to the public, business, the Universities, healthcare and political bodies.
We wish him well in his role as Light Rail Commissioner for the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority.
