Cambridge Connect proposes East West Rail (EWR) should be planned and delivered with a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system for Cambridge. An integrated approach would yield better outcomes and it could save hundreds of millions of pounds.
Specifically, we propose Cambourne would be better served by connecting it to a local MRT network using light rail, rather than by a station on EWR. An MRT network would provide fast connections from Cambourne into Cambridge City, and to the main regional employment, commercial, educational and health centres, as well as to all local rail stations. The current “dog leg” on the EWR route via Cambourne would be unnecessary. Instead, EWR could be delivered by a much shorter, cheaper and more efficient route to the south of Cambridge.
This approach would provide the strong local connections needed, at the same time as enabling rapid access to EWR at Cambridge Central, North and South rail stations.
